What and why

Summary

/tot is a planned global Claude Code skill based on Tree of Thoughts. When you type it, Claude reads the current task and suggests 3 or 4 different approaches, each with pros, cons, cost and a scoring method. You pick, Claude builds and scores each one, drops weak branches, backs up when one fails, and keeps the best. It matters because choosing between valid approaches by gut feeling is slow and easy to regret, and this makes the choice measurable.

Core arguments

  1. One command in every project. Nothing to install, just a folder in ~/.claude/skills/.
  2. Options come from the work in front of you, so they match the task and the project type.
  3. An option Claude cannot measure is dropped, so every survivor has a score.
  4. You choose what gets built. Claude only suggests.
  5. A failing branch triggers a backtrack to the next best option instead of a dead end.
  6. The winner becomes the default, with the score table as the reason.

How the agent picks the options

  1. 8

    Brainstorm

Reads your task and files, then lists every approach it can think of.

  2. 5

    Make them differ

Merges near-duplicates so each option is a different idea.

  3. 4

    Rate each one

Checks fit to the goal, measurability, cost and risk. Drops the weakest.

  4. 3

    Show you

Top 3, up to 4, with pros, cons, cost and the scoring method.

Counts are examples. An option Claude cannot measure is always dropped.
